Clinical Motion Analysis:

Motion Analysis have been developed to measure angles between body segments and to measure range of motion of various joints . By focusing on the trunk, pelvis, hips, knees and ankles, digital video cameras or high speed cameras 100-800 frame per second take images of a patient's movement and process the data through a high-tech computer system that analyzes the movement and reveals precisely where muscles and joints are and where they are not functioning properly. 3D motion analysis requires at least two cameras. Most movements require four or more cameras.

The joint can be the ankle, the knee, the hip, spine, neck, shoulder, elbow, or wrist. It used to measure angular rotation about an axis, including angular rotation of a body and twist of a joint about the axis, the present. Information from motion analysis - together with physical therapy evaluation, helps a patient's care team recommend the best treatments for abnormal movement Options include braces, medication, physical therapy and surgery.

Treatment of various injuries may require temporary restriction in the range of movement, and devices such as casts, braces, elastic bandages, and corsets have been used to provide such temporary restraint. Some of these devices and some ergonomic chairs have also been used to promote a more erect posture. In addition to providing a biofeedback signal, it is advantageous to continually save information about the patient range of motion, which may be changing with time. This allows the clinician to evaluate rehabilitation progress. Stored information provides a valuable research tool to study how movement or lack of movement may correlate with low back pain, cardiac ailments, dietary modifications, pharmacological treatments, and postural control.
